Background

From general relativity to the queues of an emergency department. The path is less winding than it looks.

I started in theoretical physics: an undergraduate and master's physics degree at Paris-Saclay in Orsay, then the theoretical and mathematical physics master's at ENS Ulm. My first research internships were on gravitational waves at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris and on black hole hydrodynamics at the University of Nottingham — systems you can neither question nor perturb, and which you therefore only understand by modelling them.

I then moved towards applied mathematics: a master's in PDEs and probability at Bordeaux, focused on stochastic modelling, analysis and spectral theory, with internships on differential operators and on fibre bundles applied to visual perception.

An emergency department is not that far away. It is a constrained dynamical system, with flows, bottlenecks, threshold effects and a saturation that propagates upstream. Bertrand Maury, who co-supervises my thesis, comes from the mathematical modelling of crowd motion himself. The difference is that here the trajectories are people, the data are dirty, and a modelling error is paid in hours spent waiting on a trolley.
